A college football rivalry that dates back to 1914, the century-long standoff between the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs is one that never fails to excite the fans. With only a couple of exceptions, the teams have always played against one another at a neutral site in Jacksonville, Florida.

Given the location, however, it is hardly surprising that fans from Georgia find the Florida field less than equal since it is located a mere 60 miles from the University of Florida in Gainesville. Every year, the Bulldogs must make the 350-mile trek south, but distance is trivial in light of the reputation of this Southern football face-off.

The Georgia-Florida standoff is quite unique in that throughout 100 years of playing each other, each team has held a significant stretch of wins. The Bulldogs were in the winner’s circle during the 1970s and 1980s, but the tables turned in the Gators’ favor once Steve Spurrier took the reigns. Spurrier was then succeeded by Ron Zook and Urban Meyer. Florida has won 12 of the past 18 games.

In 2007 — Georgia coach Mark Richt decided to fuel the fire and upset the balance once more, Richt had every one of his players rush the field upon the team’s first touchdown. While the move incurred a 15-yard penalty, this did not stop them from turning the tide against the Gators. The game ended 42-30 in Georgia’s favor, but this is hardly the first time the two have put on a great show.

In 1980, the Bulldogs held the rank as the second-best team in the league, and of course they were facing a one-point deficit against Florida in the 4th quarter. A 92-yard touchdown run by Lindsay Scott shocked the stadium, and this major turn of events has since been coined “Run, Lindsay, Run!” The Bulldogs won 26-21.
